i have to say, i always feel strange about people who think holden caulfield was going through some sort of teenage phase of seeing things in black-and-white and not a portrait of a teenager who cannot deal with his own grief and trauma.

holden was telling the whole story from a mental institution! you are told right at the start that he has had a freaking mental breakdown and people still write it off. he was uncomfortable around adult men because of heavily implied childhood sexual abuse. he was grief stricken after his younger sibling died young then abandoned and isolated at a boarding school. he called people phonies because he couldn't connect to them and because his mental state was spiralling out of control and almost nobody noticed or cared.
