through the pandemic i slightly overcame my maskaphobia (but not face shields!) i guess that was through my ocd overpowering and letting me know that covid, flu, cold, etc. are imminently desiring to infect me and we must be covered for protection!! however, i am still terrified of full covering masks, including definitely gas masks, most halloween masks, and other facial coverings.

i had a panic attack in target on friday just walking through the halloween aisles to look for window clingies. :( the masks were so huge and ominous! i swear they all become sentient and they wanted to crawl off the aisles and attach to my face and suffocate me!!

I had Kacey Musgraves on my pop socket on my phone (overpriced merch I bought at her concert) and last summer I saw her at Whole Foods. I didn’t even realize who it was at first but saw this girl looking at my phone and hardcore rolling her eyes and scoffed at me. She turned around and prissed off. Later we were checking out our groceries at the same time and I said hi to her on the way out and that I enjoyed her show at the Ryman. She straight up did NOT wanna talk to me, even though I was being very quiet, polite, and discreet, not like a loud crazy fan girl. I can understand wanting to be undercover wanting to go run errands but she was wearing this very loud, flashy outfit with the Gucci logo all over. Def not wanting to go unnoticed. It really rubbed me the wrong way and she was one of my favorites. I’ve heard countless stories like this from other people here in Nashville. I can’t ever think of her the same again. So disappointing

I was just talking yesterday about how easy it is to forget how amazing Grimes was on this release and Visions back when they first came out. Those albums were somehow both totally recognizable as being great pop albums while also being captivatingly new sounding, and were made by someone who authentically embodied the weirdness of the DIY shows and art nights you'd go to back then. Just genuinely captivating art from a weirdly captivating person. When Vanessa came out I think I listened to it about a thousand times.

It's really a shame she got as famous she did as quickly as she did because I think she benefited a lot from having the freedom to wander through ideas she was interested in and make surprising and unique connections between them, and the incredible amounts of media attention she received after Oblivion came out kind of prevented her from doing that. Like, there's absolutely no way to experiment when people are paying attention to everything you do, and I think all of her subsequent releases suffered from that.

I remember reading a thing about how when she was making Visions she just locked herself in her practice for a weekend with a bunch of uppers and cranked her album out in Garageband, which explains a ton of that album's character, whereas when she was making Art Angels, she painstakingly recorded an entire full length, leaked a couple songs to negative reactions, scrapped it, started over, moved from LA back to Canada, and then recorded the rest of it as her hair was falling out from the stress. Art Angels isn't even a bad record, but you can absolutely feel less of the spontaneity on it that made Visions so magical. She really suffered from success, and along the way all the (completely insane) stuff in her personal life kind of eclipsed her music making, which is also too bad.
