My pet theory is that it's because doing so is almost like admitting you were wrong about something or in your judgments of someone. That requires continously moving the goal posts so that you're never actually wrong. The right does this, too, and are deservedly critize for it. But there's a brand of woke leftism that does the same damn thing. Right at any cost.
